Family Discipleship
by Sharon Brooks

A few weeks ago, a friend told me that God was leading her to reach out to a particular group of people. These are people many of us would believe have little desire for godly things or godly people. Yet, as the weeks have unfolded, we have discovered just the opposite. Just as God had spoken to my friend, we have seen that people are hungry for the gospel.

These are people many Christians would shun, judge or condemn. Yet, they are exactly the people whom Jesus spent time with here on this earth. I have learned so much as God has led me on this journey to love unconditionally, let the Holy Spirit do His work and walk beside people to serve as their guide on this journey of faith.

If I love the Lord with all that I am, won’t I be willing to spend time seeking Him, hearing His heart and giving myself to His mission here on earth?

Is this what it means to engage?  I think so.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for opening Your hand to satisfy the desires of all of Your people. I thank You that You promise to watch over all who love You. Take me off the throne today and let Your name and renown be the desire of my heart. (Isaiah 43:7)

Merge Moment: Prayer Walking
This week, set aside a time to prayer walk in your neighborhood with your family. If you aren’t able to do this logistically, consider walking the perimeter of your child or student’s school. As you walk, pray for the families that are represented by the houses in your neighborhood or the families that are a part of the school your child or student attends. Ask God to give you opportunities to engage with others. Consider taking this one step further and putting the date of your prayer walk on a card and sticking it on your refrigerator as a continual reminder to pray for your neighborhood or school. Add names to the card as you and your family pray for the specific people you engage. This will give you a point of reference to see what God is doing through your family to engage East Texas.
